I recently heard that an infant’s fussiness peaks around 6 weeks. In my experience, that’s true. It actually makes sense when you think about it. Babies are more alert at 6 weeks than in their first few weeks of life, but they still can’t do a whole lot with their energy besides suck on something or cry.
It’s also been my experience that around 6 weeks postpartum I’m about to hit the bottom in terms of tiredness. It’s not the best combination. The peak of baby’s fussiness and the low of mommy’s exhaustion.
I think overall Autumn’s temperament is pretty mellow. But she is 5 weeks old and she’s definitely been crying more lately. She has no schedule yet and our nights are still full of ups and downs. She also has this incredible ability to sense when her older brother and sister have just been tucked into bed for naptime and she usually picks that moment to pop her little blue eyes open for a few hours of awake time with mommy.
Autumn can’t do much at this point. She can’t hold a rattle or sit in a bumbo or roll over. But there is one thing she’s recently learned. Something big. She can smile. And really, is any smile sweeter than a baby’s drooly, toothless one?
God’s timing is perfect. He knows exactly what will encourage a tired mom and He first gives it to her right when she needs it the most.
“Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” – Proverbs 11:25b
I love this post! What a profound thing to connect Autumn’s high energy with your low point and the first smiles. Genius… And I can’t wait to see one of those smiles in person. I like your smile, Linni, too!
such a precious photo of you two!
Oh I am right there with you! It doesn’t last forever, right? And Autumn is adorable
She is so cute Linnea! And you look beautiful!
Beautiful – both of you! She definitely has some Nyman in her…. Somehow reminded me of Nelson with that look
Great blog, remember those tired days well. Take care!
You look simply beautiful Linnea!!! Violet (my 2 yr old) had colic symptoms from 6 weeks to 5 1/2 months old! It was tiring but when she smiled it made every part of my exhaustion slip away! It doesn’t sound like Autumn has colice but here’s an interesting piece of information – a cousin of mine is a nurse and is currently (further) studying colic and doctors are starting to think it’s an underdeveloped nervous system (not all the tummy issues they used to blame)…the last month that Violet had colic I was able to soothe her by keeping her environment stable…no wind in her face, no loud jarring noises, no sudden movements to surprise her, didn’t place her where the heat/air would turn on or blow near her face…these things helped immensely! Just a thought at this 6 weeks milestone It’s crazy to think about their little bodies developing at a WILD pace and how it affects them! Love from one mommy to another xo!
Wow, 5 and a 1/2 months! That’s a long time to deal with colic! Thank you so much for your sweet, thoughtful comment and the mommy love. =)
It was so good to see you and your beautiful family, Linni. You are doing such a great job. Hang in there, and enjoy those precious smiles!
It was great to see you guys too. Thanks for taking the time out to meet up with us!
Hi Linni,
You are so wonderful and Autumn is precious. What a lovely photo of her smiling You are right that these weeks are tough with babies not being able to do much, but having increased energy and we are praying that you too will have an increase of energy through all the times when you need it!
Autumn reminds me a lot of your Papa in quite a few of the different photos I’ve seen of her. She is lovely.
Thank you for the birth announcement – we have it on our fridge!
We love you guys so much x
We miss you guys too! When my mom was here she told us all about how Nick & the twins are doing and the cute things they say. Hopefully we’ll see you again soon!
So great to receive the birth announcement on your daughter Autumn! Wishing you some peace during your sleepless nights.
Thanks! I hope you and your family are doing well.
