If you’re looking for a baking project, and you want to make something extremely yummy without loads of sugar in it, and you don’t mind turning your kitchen into a floury mess, you have to try this recipe for soft whole wheat pretzels. We made these the other day and they’re the perfect combination of warm, buttery, salty goodness, especially when you eat them right out of the oven.
The dough needs an hour and a half to rise and it takes a bit of concentration to heat the milk-butter mixture to 120 degrees (well, for me it does), so I went ahead and made the dough during naptime (which at our house usually means that Micah is fast asleep and Sky is tearing her room apart, which I’m okay with since she doesn’t come out until I get her an hour later).
As soon as the kids were up, we got right to work on the fun part. Micah was more interested in playing with the dirty dishes in the sink than actually making pretzels, but Sky had fun rolling out the dough and twisting it into classic pretzel shapes. At one point things got a little crazy when she decided to toss a bit of dough in the air like pizza crust and it went sailing across the kitchen. But overall, she did well and the end result was very tasty.
Side note: you don’t need that much flour on your counter when you roll out the dough. We definitely overdid it and ended up with clouds of flour in the air (which coated the cabinets and the floor). But making messes in the kitchen with happy kids is fun, so on second thought, maybe you should go for a little extra flour.
When you come north, bring the recipe. We’ll have some pretzel fun in Michigan!
We are counting the days!
ooh, you’re making me hungry! sounds like such a fun afternoon!
When are we getting together? Hopefully soon!
This weekend, if you’re available! Saturday?
You are such a fun mom. I would never try this because I probably wouldn’t have time to clean up the flour for about 5 days! Maybe when they are a bit bigger I will come back to this post.
I don’t blame you Suzy! If I were in your shoes, I just might wait until they were able to clean up the kitchen themselves when the fun is over.
Linnea, in that top photo, Sky looks like Aron to me!
