My little “helpers” might not actually contribute a lot to the baking process yet (aside from adding A LOT of mess), but most of the time I like having them with me in the kitchen. Especially now that Micah is moving out of his leg-clinging phase and can participate more in the process. We’ve been baking just about every day at our house lately, going for simple recipes with short ingredient lists. Yesterday we were at home all day and made granola, cheese crackers, and popcorn with real butter and sea salt. I think I swept the floor five times. But at the end of the day, it felt like we’d accomplished something together.
And my, those cheese crackers were tasty. Don’t they look yummy? Here’s the recipe, which comes from a blog I’m reading a lot of these days, in case you’re interested.
I often hear how important it is to spend time playing with my kids as opposed to getting things done. I know my biggest accomplishment is just being with Sky and Micah, doing what I can to shape their character. But I’ve noticed we all tend to be much happier working on projects together than when we have an abundance of playtime. The kids fight over toys and I find myself, well, a little bored. That’s probably a character flaw on my part, but I’ve decided not to analyze it. Instead we’ll keep plugging away at our projects and baking experiments, making ridiculous messes, taking our sweet time, accomplishing very little, and feeling really good about it.
I love this! That is exactly how we’ve spent our afternoon You are teaching Sky and Micah life lessons in that kitchen.
Thanks Brandi. Did you make the vanilla wheat cookies?
LOL! If being bored with too much free play is a character flaw, I think it’s universal! I’m dreading the day Nico figures out that chores aren’t playing.
Maybe he never has to learn that…
Thanks for posting the link to the recipe … looks like something I might actually have time to try! I would love to have the kids “help” me in the kitchen, but it’s just too hard to keep an eye on all of them. Maybe when my mom is here at the end of the month, I can experiment with one in the kitchen at a time.
Keep up with me, Ted, and our Fab Four at http://four-by-two.blogspot.com.
Suzy, I can’t even imagine having all those little helpers… it would get out of hand for sure. And your kids would probably love it!
